Question : I HAVE been suffering from urinary tract infection for about a month. I have consulted a doctor and done the urine test. E. coli was detected. I have taken a few types of antibiotics but am still suffering from it. Kindly suggest what I should do to prevent a recurrence of it.
Answer : URINARY tract infection (UTI) is a condition where one or more structures in the urinary tract such as the kidneys, bladder and urethra become infected after bacteria has overcome its strong natural defences. Vagina flora imbalance is the common cause for urinary tract infection. Generally, bacteria such as E. coli is the main culprit. If left untreated, bacteria may multiply at the opening of the urethra and travel up to the bladder and kidneys.
Lactobacillus GR-1 and RC-14 are also known as beneficial bacteria or probiotics. They help to re-establish the vaginal flora balance and compete ferociously with harmful bacteria for both attachment sites and food. These strains are clinically proven to reduce symptoms of UTIs.
Long-term consumption reduces the frequencies of UTI episodes. Long-term supplementation is recommended for those who are prone to recurrent UTIs. A high dosage of vitamin C daily will result in a slight acidisation of the urine, creating an 'unfriendly' environment for certain pathogenic bacteria. Vitamin C has been shown to inhibit the growth of E.coli.
Drink lots of water to flush out bacteria from the urinary tract. Reduce or avoid taking refined sugar, refined white flour products, processed food and beverages containing artificial sweeteners. You may include garlic in meals as it has anti-microbial properties. Avoid alcohol as an excessive intake may suppress the immune system.
Always clean the genital and urinary areas from front to back with soap and water after each bowel movement. Avoid feminine hygiene sprays, douches and powders. Urinate frequently to help empty the bladder as well as to help prevent bladder irritation.
