Smart Advice from Nutritionist on How to Avoid High Blood Sugar Levels

According to NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), approximately 25.8 million Americans have diabetes. Of that number, about 7 million remain undiagnosed. There are three kinds of diabetes: Type 1 (latent autoimmune), Type 2 (diabetes mellitus), and gestational. Type 2 diabetes is the fastest growing blood sugar disorder in America due to the rising obesity epidemic. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by the pancreas ceasing to produce insulin which is needed to maintain good blood sugar levels. Unlike Type 1 diabetes which is caused by an autoimmune disorder, Type 2 usually develops due to insulin resistance and pancreatic malfunction.

Avoid High Blood Sugar LevelsDepending on the severity of their condition, people with Type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels through a combination of insulin injections, nutrition, and exercise. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to several health complications such as retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy. In addition, diabetics have an increased risk for kidney failure, heart attacks, amputations, and strokes. Needless to say, people with diabetes must take care to do all they can to keep their blood glucose levels under control. Author and nutritionist Susan Dopart recommends that diabetics pay particular attention to the amount of carbohydrates they consume.

Carbohydrates are a concern because the body readily converts them into glucose. Ingestion of excessive amounts of carbohydrates, particularly simple carbs like candy and sodas, can lead to blood sugar spikes and consistently elevated blood sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics recommend that 45 to 65 percent of calories consumed should be carbohydrates. Susan Dopart recommends that diabetics choose low-carb alternatives such as fresh fruit and vegetables. She also thinks that increasing the amount of proteins and fast consumed during breakfast may also reduce the likelihood of developing high blood sugar levels.

The Mayo clinic also weighed in on this issue with a report that indicates unrefined whole grains are preferred over processed foods. Unrefined foods tend to have higher nutritional content and contain more fiber while processed foods are high in calories, fat, and sugar. Diabetics can also maintain their blood sugar levels by monitoring them on a consistent basis and taking action if their blood sugar deviates outside of recommended levels. Weight loss and exercise were also positive contributors to healthy blood glucose levels.
